Climate Threats

Climate Threat 1: Shifting Seasons

Climate Change disrupts the seasonal windows:

  • Warmer springs cause plants to bloom earlier
  • Sudden frost events damage early blossoms
  • Some species now flower twice
Climate Threat 2: Heatwaves

Many plants in the Hortus rely on moderate temperatures. Heatwaves create:

  • Leaf scorch
  • Reduced flowering
  • Shortened blooming periods
  • High water demand
Climate Threat 3: Droughts

Plants that once thrived in Eichstätt’s mild climate now struggle to survive prlonged dry periods. They are endangered by:

  • Root dehydration
  • Soil compaction
  • Reduced nutrient uptake
  • Decline of species that are intolerate to dry summers
Climate Threat 4: Extreme Weather Events

When extreme rainfall, storms and hail hits:

  • Soil is washed away
  • Roots become exposed
  • Damaged blossoms
  • Broken stems and branches
